CHAPTER SEVEN
THE track from the beach led uphill. The gra¬dient was only slight, but half-buried rocks, loose stones and rampant undergrowth made the going hazardous. Macy soon found she didn't have to pretend to be breathless.
She was glad, too, of the need to concentrate. Ross walking ahead of her was a distraction she didn't need. She'd forgotten, or tried to, the lithe effortless stride, the sense of male power ema¬nating from him.
'Want some help?' he asked when she hesi¬tated at the broad bleached limb of a tree com¬pletely blocking their path.
In line with her role as semi-invalid, Macy forced a wan smile. 'Maybe.'
His hands closed on her waist, and, shocked, she found herself lifted bodily into the air. She was no featherweight, but the life he'd been leading since their separation had turned his muscles to tempered steel.
For an endless moment she was clamped against him, the half-naked warmth of his body penetrating her thin clothing as if it hadn't existed at all, making her potently aware of the clench of muscle and sinew as he lowered her gently to the ground on the other side of the tree.
It was a stark reminder of his physicality. A disturbing warning that if he chose to use his strength against her she would be helpless. A battle of wits seemed the only recourse she had, but so far Ross had appeared able to keep ahead of the game there too.
'Thank you,' she managed, dry-mouthed. He wasn't touching her any more. He wasn't even near her, for heaven's sake, but already walking on ahead, yet the sensation of being in his arms was as vivid as if she carried the imprint of his chest and loins superimposed upon her own.
A wave of heat, which had nothing to do with the afternoon sun, swept through her. She rallied herself fiercely.
'Sorry to be so feeble,' she tossed carelessly to him.
'I should keep it cut back, but I don't come this way that often.' Ross slashed with his hand an intrusive clump of undergrowth.
'It'll all have to be completely cleared anyway.' she spoke the thought aloud, and received an glance.
I'm sure it will,' he said. 'Nature can be such inconvenience for rich people who like their grounds tidy.'
She bit her lip. 'We're not out to ruin it. Just to use its natural resources to their advantage.'
Keep to business—strictly business—she told herself as the pounding of her heart began to steady.
'You've been well-programmed, Macy,' Ross commented, his mouth twisting. 'Tell me, how did the Gilmour-Denys spies discover this place? It's been Hilliard private property for gener¬ations, and no one sets foot here without an invitation.'
'As I've discovered to my cost,' Macy mut¬tered. 'As a matter of fact, Cameron saw it himself some years ago. He came down here and chartered a plane to look at a number of possi¬bilities. What he saw of Thunder Cay seemed to inspire him, and as soon as he got back to Britain he commissioned plans and drawings. The whole thing became his dream.
